2 more Yosemite visitors have mouse-borne virus

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Two more Yosemite National Park visitors have been found with a mouse-borne virus blamed for the deaths of two people, bringing the total number of infections to six, state health officials said Thursday.

Anita Gore, a spokeswoman for California Department of Public Health, said the discoveries were made through the agency's investigation into cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome at the famed park.

The infections spurred park officials to close 91 tent cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley, where five of the six infections occurred. Gore said one of the infected people may have been in another area of the park.

"Our investigation is trying to determine which area of the park that person visited," Gore said.

Over the past three weeks, two people have died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after staying in cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley.

Park officials said the double-walled design of the cabins that were closed Tuesday made it easy for mice to nest between the walls. The disease is carried in the feces, urine and saliva of deer mice and other rodents.

The two that died had stayed the so-called "Signature" cabins. Mike Gauthier, Yosemite chief of staff, said the design of the luxury cabins that are new to the park allowed for rodent infestation.

"We just weren't aware that design would lead to it," he said.

The illness begins as flu-like symptoms but can quickly affect the lungs. It can take up to six weeks to incubate. Five of the people who fell ill are known to have stayed in the tent cabins in June or July, and warnings have gone out to visitors who stayed in Curry Village in June, July or August.

The hantavirus outbreak occurred despite efforts by park officials to step up protection efforts last April. A 2010 report from the state health department warned park officials that rodent inspection efforts should be increased after a visitor to the Tuolumne Meadows area of the park fell ill.

The new hantavirus policy, enacted April 25, was designed to provide a safe place, "free from recognized hazards that may cause serious physical harm or death."

It came after the state report revealed that 18 percent of mice trapped for testing at various locations around the park were positive for hantavirus. The report said park officials should take steps to prevent mice from entering areas where people sleep.

"Inspections for rodent infestations and appropriate exclusion efforts, particularly for buildings where people sleep, should be enhanced," it said.

"We worked with Yosemite to evaluate risk and make recommendations to reduce the possibility of transmission to people," added Vicki Kramer, chief of the health department's vector-borne disease section. "That included reducing the number of mice, and excluding them from structures."

In 2009, the park installed the 91 new, higher-end cabins to replace some that had been closed or damaged after parts of Curry Village, which sits below the 3,000-foot Glacier Point promontory, were determined to be in a rock-fall hazard zone.

The new cabins have canvas exteriors and drywall or plywood inside, with insulation in between. Park officials found this week when they tried to shore up some of the cabins that mice had built nests in the walls.

The deer mice most prone to carrying the virus can squeeze through holes just one-quarter-inch in diameter. They are distinguished from solid-colored house mice by their white bellies and gray and brown bodies.

"Those cabins were all immediately investigated and cleaned when initial reports came out," Gauthier said. "But we want to be extra sure and not take any chances."

Yosemite's hantavirus plan also calls for awareness training of park employees and prescribes protective measures and equipment to reduce exposure.

"That's been a clear part of our messaging. My understanding is we did implement all of the measures of those recommendations," Gauthier said.

The state concurs that officials in Yosemite took steps to deal with potential hantavirus exposure, but there are limitations, given the location.

"Yosemite, to their credit, has taken quite a few steps to address this," Kramer said. "But it's a wilderness area and these buildings aren't going to be tight. It's impossible to get rid of the deer mice, so there is going to be some risk to being in a wilderness area."

Meanwhile, the park sent warning emails and letters Wednesday to another 1,000 people who stayed in tent cabins, after officials found that a computer glitch had stopped the notices from going out with the original 1,700 warnings Monday. The warning says anyone with flu-like symptoms or respiratory problems should seek immediate medical attention.

In 2011, half of the 24 U.S. hantavirus cases ended in death. But since 1993, when the virus first was identified, the average death rate is 36.39 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Most of the nearly 600 cases reported since 1993 have been in New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Arizona and California. Most often they are isolated, so having this cluster of cases from a small area in Yosemite has perplexed public health officials.

The federal government has two epidemiologists working in the park. They are trapping mice and rodents in an effort to determine how much of the population carries the virus and to see whether there are more mice in Yosemite Valley this year than in other years.

Kramer warned people never to sweep or vacuum mouse droppings. Instead, spray them with a mixture of bleach and water then wipe it up with paper towels or a mop.

Fairfax County says it will revisit sign rule that sparked church lawsuit

In an e-mail sent Thursday to the Board of Supervisors, the county attorney?s office said it has asked the church to agree to change the sign only at a ?reasonable interval,? presumably forgoing the limit of two messages a day, according to a county official who saw the e-mail. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the lawsuit is pending.

According to the official, the e-mail said that the code violation against the Church of the Good Shepherd has been dismissed and that the county?s zoning administrator has recommended that the message limit for all electronic signs be reevaluated. The e-mail did not define what a ?reasonable interval? was.

Several supervisors praised the decisions.

?This is what happens when you?re not careful with regulation,? Supervisor Pat S. Herrity (R-Springfield) said.

The church, on a scenic, wooded stretch of Hunter Mill Road, installed the electronic sign at the beginning of June, replacing one whose lettering had to be changed manually.

Last month, the congregation received a letter from a zoning investigator saying he had observed three messages on the sign in a 24-hour period ? a violation. One message offered neighbors refuge from the heat after the June derecho. Another promoted the church?s Web site, and the third listed the time of a group prayer meeting. The county ordered the church to either permanently limit the sign to two message changes a day or remove it.

Although church officials got a permit to put up the sign, they say they didn?t know about the message limit until the violation letter arrived.

After the county and the congregation couldn?t agree on a compromise, the church filed a lawsuit in federal court in Alexandria arguing that the message limit violates rights to free speech and the free exercise of religion.

At the heart of the issue is a zoning ordinance that bans electronic signs that use flashing lights or moving text.

The church?s attorney, Michael York, declined to comment on the proposed compromise except to say that the church has always wanted to find a solution outside of court and still does.

Sherry Spinelli, a member of the church?s board of trustees, said Thursday afternoon that the board had yet to see the county?s offer but that it sounded reasonable. She said all the church wants is to post a few messages a day as it sees fit ? not to use scrolling text or put words on a constant, distracting rotation.

Church officials say they think they were singled out for enforcement because someone who doesn?t like the sign complained to the county. Although some neighbors have said they see no problem with it, others have described the sign as too flashy and commercial-looking given the surroundings.

It stands a few feet off the ground. The electronic portion is about 21/ 2 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

Even some who have criticized it, though, have said they don?t understand why the county is concerned with the number of messages it displays.

The church has said that enforcement is arbitrary, with many signs in the county out of compliance and with exemptions for signs that display the time or temperature.

Supervisor John C. Cook (R-Braddock) said that?s what he sees as the biggest problem. He noted that school signs across the county routinely break the rules.

?There?s definitely an equity issue that needs to be addressed,? Cook said.

Supervisor Jeff C. McKay (D-Lee) agreed. ?What can look crystal clear at 30,000 feet is murky as all get-out at sidewalk level,? he said in a statement.

The hardest part will be deciding on a new definition for what constitutes moving text, Supervisor Michael R. Frey (R-Sully) said. He said he doesn?t want to see anything nearing words that scroll, but he agreed with other supervisors that two messages a day is too restrictive.

?We need to find a consensus on what?s reasonable,? he said.

Simple Steps to Cut Risk in the Stock Exchange | Invest in the Markets

Assuming too much risk is a simple way many investors get into trouble. Often driven by the hope make an ?easy? profit, investors both knowingly and unassumingly take on risk? which is ultimately unavoidable. However, what is avoidable is taking on too much risk? the kind of perilousness that can poison your portfolio and cause that gut wrenching feeling that keeps you up at night. So, let?s look at a few simple steps every investor can take to bring balance and peace into their investment portfolios.

Diversify

Diversification is a common word? and if you ask investors, many of them will claim to understand this financial concept quite well. They respond with the traditional sector diversification model which encourages investors to spread their dollars over a variety of sectors. Some go a little further and suggest diversification includes investing in more than one asset within a specific sector. Often these investors are big believers in mutual funds.

Yet for many, diversification becomes a code word for dilution. They simply invest in so many things, in such small quantities, that they dilute their positions? both the good and the bad. They fail to recognize global diversification or diversification over time (i.e. shorter term or longer term investments). Most of all, they often exclude inverse funds that help bring profits to their portfolios when all else is dropping in value.

At the end of the day, investors who have a broad understanding of diversification without diluting their portfolios decrease their risk and provide themselves opportunities to experience profits when all else is falling apart.

Focus on Quality Investments

The temptation is to load up on those investments that did well last year. In fact, I remember sitting down for several years with a financial advisor who would look at the performance of a mutual fund the previous year and if it was in the first quartile, he?d recommend that I shift my money there. Unfortunately, rarely did they continue to perform so well the following year.

Avoid loading up on last year?s winners? or the speculative ?penny? stocks of tomorrow. While diversification may include a speculative stock, it is only a small part of one?s portfolio. In contrast, look for stocks with growing revenues, proven sales, and stable management. These stocks, with their healthy cash flow, are well beyond the risky start-up phase where so many companies flounder for years and even fail.

Plan your Exit Strategy

Knowing when to buy is only part of the challenge. As you know, we suggest the wisest time to buy is when there is a rise in the stock price. Too many investors fail because they buy the dips? only to find themselves holding the investment into what has now become a crater they can?t get out of. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve listened to investors tell me, ?I can?t sell it now? it?s lost too much.? That statement is usually followed by a hopeful claim that it will come back someday.

As stocks rise, so do our point of sale. In other words, we follow the stock up, raising our expectations on the way up? and guarding against any unforeseen downturns. If a stock misses their revenue figures, we are more apt to sell then to hold on with a hope and a prayer. At Invest in the Markets, we?d rather sell our position for a small gain than hold it for any kind of loss. And when we?re up significantly, we don?t want to see those profits evaporate? which they can do all too quickly sometimes.

Investing can be relaxing? and it doesn?t require a gamblers mind. In fact, by putting into practice the simple principles of Capital Preservation, Minimizing Risk, and Maximizing Returns, any household investor can consistently make money without assuming too much risk or getting themselves into financial trouble.

Branding Corporate Identity?Impression and Expectation

Visual impression attracts potential clients. Each logo, brochure, and advertisement must be your business advantage.

What?s your worth?

Branding corporate identity is essential to business success. Most clients seek services and purchase products based on their perception of a company.? A ?brand? is what customers think when they hear the name of your business. Is it quality service? Is the price affordable? Is the product world-class? And so on. These are the questions that arise when a customer sees information that relate to a product. Thus, it is crucial to create a positive image that will help promote your business to others. ?A business? visual identity must demonstrate the business worth, value, and ambition of the organization. An appropriate image is important to effectively promote any business.

Is that a promise?

Competition in business has been fierce with the country?s economic condition. It is a challenge for most companies to exceed customer?s expectations without compromising the state of the business. Branding corporate identity is equally important to have a competitive edge for business success, customer satisfaction, and profit gain. It is the emotional link between the business and your client. Your brand must emphasize what makes it different and why it is the best choice. A brand must convey the right message and live up to its promise to its target audience. A good example will be the following famous brands that relate to its clients:

  • Apple Computers ? ?Think Different?
  • American Airlines ? ?Something special in the air?
  • BMW ? ?The Ultimate Driving Machine?
  • Citibank ? ?The Citi Never Sleeps?
  • Disneyland ? ?The happiest place on earth?
  • Energizer ? ?It keeps going, and going, and going??
  • Facebook -?Connect and Share with the people in your life?
  • Ford ? ?Everything we do is driven by you?
  • Gillette ? ?The best a man can get?
  • Hershey?s ? ?There?s a smile in every Hershey bar
  • Honda ? ?The power of dreams?
  • IBM ? ?Solutions for a small planet?
  • Jaguar ? ?The art of performance?
  • Johnnie Walker ? ?Keep walking?
  • Kit Kat ? ?Have a break. Have a Kit-Kat?
  • M&M Chocolates ? ?Melts in your mouth, not in your hands?
  • Nike ? ?Just do it?
  • Nokia ? ?Connecting people?
  • Pepsi ? ?The choice of a new generation?
  • Reebok ? ?I am what I am?
  • Samsung ? ?Digitally yours?
  • Yellow Pages ? ?Let your fingers do the walking?
  • YouTube ? ?Broadcast yourself?

The ?tagline? says it all

One of the most important considerations in branding corporate identity is having a distinct tagline that captures attention and entails what a business offers. A customer?s ?word of mouth? is an advantage to effectively promote your product and service. Thus, taglines are powerful words that can simplify complex messages to your clients. It has to create awareness and an element of quality for the product. A tagline has to be memorable, meaningful, and relevant. Potential clients will not read a three paragraph mission statement tagline. Choose phrases that you can recite in a conversation and even while you sleep. In creating a brand identity, it is significant to positively capture your client?s emotion. It is crucial to have an effective tagline. It must not create confusion among your competitors. Branding corporate identity is accomplished through unique and meaningful business promotion and the quality service experience for each client.

Wet weather won't stop GOP Convention protesters

A few hundred protesters from groups like Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink say Tropical Storm Issac, expected to reach hurricane-force Tuesday, won't keep them away from the Republican National Convention.

By Tamara Lush,?Associated Press / August 26, 2012

John Penley (c.) of New York City smokes a cigarette where protesters have set up a camp dubbed "Romneyville" in a restricted area near the site where the Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa, on August 25. Protesters say Tropical Storm Issac will not deter them.

The few hundred protesters gathered under rainy skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump heavy rains on Tampa won't deter them from trying to get out their message that America needs to change, especially for the middle class.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" are melting on a warm, sticky day. Occupy protesters say it represents the melting away of the middle class in America.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies in the city of some 25,000 people and say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy is a left-leaning protest group of people in their mid-20s who generally believe that the financial system is stacked against a majority of people.

Gaurapp and Landecker say that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with heavy rainfall on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

The protests stayed small also by mid-afternoon.

The weather isn't a deterrent to 52 year-old Donald Butner, who says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

The protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America. Often, younger people make up the Occupy protests, but in Tampa, several older people joined the marchers.

That included the 54-year-old Landecker , who spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

Wasserman Schultz calls Romney is the ?most extreme? candidate ...

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz denounced Mitt Romney as the ?most extreme? candidate on immigration that we have seen in modern times during an appearance this morning on NBC?s Meet the Press.

She also grabbed hold of Rep. Todd Akin?s comments in an effort to tie them to Romney, pointing out Paul Ryan?s support for legislation that would have limited abortion funding to ?forcible rape? during her appearance.

Wasserman Schultz attacked the GOP platform?s support for a ?Human Life Amendment? for the absence of any mention of exceptions for rape, incest or the life of the mother.

?It gives you a window into the soul of the Republican Party,? Wasserman Schultz said.

Wasserman Schultz contrasted Romney?s stance that illegal immigrants should ?self deport? to their countries of origin with President Obama?s recent decision to circumvent Congress and grant amnesty to illegal immigrants who came as children.

Romney?s approach would jeopardize America?s future, she said, contrasting the two positions.

?It?s just an unrealistic and extreme position,? Wasserman Schultz said.

Speaking on immigration during an appearance on CBS?s Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla) perhaps the nation?s most recognized Hispanic Republican defended the GOP?s stance on immigration, saying that Obama?s approach was not the right way to go.

?A million people a year immigrate here legally,? Rubio said. ?We should celebrate that. The fact that a million people a year legally immigrate to the United States ? no other country even comes close.

Rubio argues that the Republican message is a pro-Hispanic message because members of the community want their children to do better than they did.

?There?s one system that allows them to do that, and that is the American free-enterprise system, which the president is undermining and which Mitt Romney understands and will support,? Rubio said. ?For a Hispanic family and a Hispanic voter in this country, immigration is not a statistical issue; they know somebody in this predicament, and it?s a human issue to them.

?We have to be clear that people understand that Republicans are the pro-legal immigration party, and beyond that you have the message of economic empowerment and leaving your kids better off than yourself,? Rubio continued. ?It?s really important to Hispanics.?

On abortion, Rubio said the GOP is open to diverse opinions, contrary to fellow Floridian Wasserman Schultz?s effort to paint the GOP as extremist during her Meet the Press appearance.

?I think what?s important to understand, yes, Mitt Romney is pro-life and the Republican Party, although it has diversity on this issue, is the home of the pro-life movement in American politics,? Rubio said.

While on CNN?s State of the Union Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, herself an abortion-rights supporter, agreed with Rubio?s position and defended the GOP platform on abortion, saying it is not rigid and that the GOP welcomes divergent viewpoints.

Ron Paul on Romney: ?I don?t fully endorse him?

Ron Paul (T.J. Kirkpatrick/Getty Images)

TAMPA -- Mitt Romney's presidential campaign gave Texas Rep. Ron Paul a chance to speak at the Republican National Convention, but he declined due to the conditions of the offer, the New York Times reports:

Mr. Paul, in an interview, said convention planners had offered him an opportunity to speak under two conditions: that he deliver remarks vetted by the Romney campaign, and that he give a full-fledged endorsement of Mr. Romney. He declined.

"It wouldn't be my speech," Mr. Paul said. "That would undo everything I've done in the last 30 years. I don't fully endorse him for president."

Republicans plan to show a tribute video honoring the the retiring libertarian politician Tuesday at the convention. Paul is also holding his own rally nearby on Sunday afternoon.

'Cyborg' Tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

Iran says Hamas not invited to Non-Aligned summit

The Hamas premier in Gaza has not been invited to this week's summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran, Iran said on Sunday, heading off a threatened boycott by the Palestinian president.

"Up to now, no official invitation from the Islamic Republic of Iran and the person of (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad has been sent to Hamas's popular prime minister (Ismail Haniya)," the Iranian spokesman for the summit said.

"Only (Palestinian president) Mahmud Abbas has been invited to the NAM summit," Mohammad Reza Forqani said in a statement quoted by the ISNA and Mehr news agencies.

Hamas said on Saturday that Haniya would take part in the summit in Tehran on Thursday and Friday, "in accordance with the invitation from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad," according to a statement by his spokesman.

Abbas, whose internationally recognised Palestinian Authority is at odds with Gaza's Islamist Hamas rulers, responded with a warning through Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Malki that he would stay away from the summit if Haniya went.

Forqani's statement that Haniya had never been invited appeared an effort to spare Iran embarrassment over an Abbas boycott. Iran is a fierce supporter of the Palestinian cause and an arch-foe of Israel.

On Saturday, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, told reporters that Iran has "the duty to invite all (NAM) members" and that Abbas would take part and "some special guests" had also been invited.

The NAM, born at the height of the Cold War as a grouping of nations that saw themselves as independent of both Washington and Moscow, counts 119 member states plus "Palestine" as members.

Other participating nations include Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Ghana, India, Iraq, Kuwait, Pakistan, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Zimbabwe.

Iran is presenting the summit as proof that it is not as isolated on the world stage as the United States has tried to portray.

On Sunday, a meeting of experts from NAM countries began a two-day meeting in Tehran to prepare for the summit. On Tuesday and Wednesday, foreign ministers from several of the countries are to develop that work ahead of the summit itself on Thursday and Friday.

Is Isabella Cruise Signing Up To Join Church of Scientology's Controversial Sea Org?

Pacific Coast News/Splash News

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Is Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's 19-year-old daughter, Isabella, joining the Church if Scientology's ultra secretive and controversial division, Sea Org?

According to the Village Voice, "Isabella, announced on a private Facebook page this week that her boyfriend Eddie Frencher signed Scientology's billion-year Sea Org contract about a week ago and is now going through its Estates Project Force boot camp in Los Angeles... Former Sea Org executives tell us that Isabella would be under intense pressure to join the hardcore Scientology organization herself or be forced to give up her relationship with Frencher."

PHOTOS: Isabella Cruise Shows Off New Feather Tattoo

In 1966, L. Ron Hubbard stepped down as executive director of Scientology to devote himself to research and writing, and went on to form the Sea Organization, an elite group within Scientology that was based on three ships, the Diana, the Athena, and the Apollo. According to reports, Sea Org members routinely work 100 hour weeks, for $50 a week, and have no contact with family or friends outside of the organization.

Reps for Tom Cruise have denied that Isabella is signing up to Sea Org though, stating: "[Isabella is] not a public figure and deserves privacy. However, she is not joining the church's religious order."

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Isabella was unceremoniously fired from her step-mom Katie Holmes? clothing line, Holmes and Yang, just weeks before Katie filed for divorce from Tom.

Isabella and Frencher had been living together in an apartment near downtown Los Angeles.

Performing The 401k Gold Transfer | The Board Magazine

The way for using a standard 401k plan to acquire gold assets would be to do a gold 401k transfer. Performing a rollover of a 401k to gold permits you to invest in gold and also other rare metals, although you will not be permitted to physically get the gold bullion you buy. Your gold coins will be safely stored in a safe and secure gold depository. You must also get routine information regarding your asset?s market price. Much like other types of 401k, you may encash the gold assets anytime but it could also incur a fee.

Transferring a traditional 401k to 401k gold plan won?t abolish the original asset. It simply enables you to begin purchasing and owning gold. In addition, gold on the Individual Retirement Account is exempted from almost all taxes.

The American administration permits only specific types of gold to be used as retirement assets within an IRA. You may not put gold bullion coins which you currently own in the precious metals Individual Retirement Account. You gold bullion coin permitted for Individual Retirement Accounts is the US Eagle gold coin. Other gold coins may also be used but should be no less than 0.995 pure.

An additional requirement is that every coin be an acceptable mode of payment. Under these prerequisites the Australian Nugget or Australian Kangaroo, Austrian Philharmonic, and the Canadian Maple Leaf are included in the accepted set of coins that could be held in an Individual Retirement Account plan. Furthermore, 99.5 percent gold bars are also approved in case they have been minted by accepted refiners, like the PAMP Suisse gold bars or the Credit Suisse gold.

Gold is not the only rare metal that?s approved for Individual Retirement Accounts. Palladium, platinum, and silver are likewise accepted assets. The Individual Retirement Account specifications for silver investment allow the US Eagle silver coins, and also 99.9 percent silver coins like the Canadian Silver Maple Leafs, Mexican Libertads, and the Kookaburras of Australia. Silver bullion bars made by authorized mints are also accepted.

Platinum is another acceptable precious metal which may be added to your own IRA investments. The Australian Koala, American Eagle, Isle of Man Cat, Isle of Man Noble, and the Maple Leaf of Canada are on the list of accepted platinum coins. Platinum bullion bars must be no less than 99.95 percent in pureness and must likewise be produced by authorized refiners.

Last of all, palladium is likewise authorized for Individual Retirement Account investments. Palladium bullion must be no less than 99.95 percent pure and also should be fabricated in the approved mints.

Remember that your own economic safety will be at stake. It is essential to select and hold the correct type of precious metal for your own investment objectives. A 401k gold program or a gold IRA may be for you.

Online Health Insurance | The Financial & Insurance Tips Journal.

When buying insurance you don?t have to be restricted to the insurance providers in your area. You can receive instant health insurance quotes and even buy a policy online from any of a number of health insurance websites. In addition to receiving online health insurance quotes from the one company, many insurance websites also offer estimated quotes from competing websites so that you can get an overview of your options without leaving the page. Though this can give you an idea of where their quote stands against those of their competitors, it is still generally a good idea to get separate quotes from other sources as well.

Receiving an instant health insurance quote online is generally very easy. Since there is no doctor?s physical required to receive the quote, you will simply have to answer some questions so that the quote can be generated for you. The questions generally relate to your medical history, though some sites that offer online health insurance quotes may need information about your occupation or credit as well. Once the questions have been answered, the site will provide you with a preliminary quote based on your answers. Depending on the site, you may be contacted within a few days in order to develop a more specific quote over the phone as well.

Taking the time to shop around for online health insurance quotes can really help you to find a deal on the insurance policy that you buy. It can also be used to supplement quotes received from local providers.

With the rising cost of medical care, health insurance is all but essential. The hard part comes in finding insurance coverage that won?t break your budget. If you?re trying to find affordable health insuranc online, it?s important that you take the time to explore several different options before deciding on one. There are a number of health insurance companies on the internet who offer affordable rates on health coverage for both individuals and families. Shopping around for rate quotes so that you can compare them against each other lets you ensure that you have found the best price on the insurance that you want.

When you are looking at quotes from health insurance companies in online, make sure that you look at more than just the amount that you?ll have to pay per term. Different insurance policies can have slightly different coverage levels, and you don?t want to end up not getting the coverage that you want because the policy had a lower price. You can still find affordable health insurance in Texas without having to lose out on the coverage that you receive.

Once you have found an affordable policy that offers the best level of coverage for the price, make sure that you reference the original quote when you go to buy the policy. If possible, talk to the person who gave you the quote in the first place so that you can ask them any questions that you might have before you buy.

Police: Rodney King death ruled accidental

FILE - In this April 13, 2012 file photo, Rodney King poses for a portrait in Los Angeles. Police said Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, that King's death in June was ruled an accidental drowning and there were multiple illegal drugs in his system. King was the black motorist severely beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1991. The officers' acquittal triggered the devastating 1992 Los Angeles riot. (AP Photo/Matt Sayles, File)

(AP) ? Rodney King had been drinking and was on drugs when he plunged into a swimming pool and accidentally drowned in June, a coroner's report released Thursday concluded.

The report confirmed a previous police conclusion that King died by accident, and the case will be closed, Rialto police Capt. Randy DeAnda said.

"It concludes our investigation," he said. "Basically, our investigation revealed the same conclusion and now that we have the toxicology, it basically reinforces that."

King, whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 led to deadly rioting, had long struggled with addiction.

A call from King's fiancee brought police to his Rialto home at 5:30 a.m. on June 17. Officers pulled him from the bottom of the pool, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Cynthia Kelley told authorities she was in bed when she was awakened and saw King at a patio door.

"She described him making grunting and growling sounds and having frothy secretions coming from his mouth," the report states.

When King fell over a planter, Kelley went for her cellphone to call for help. She heard a splash and by the time she got to the pool, King was face down in the deep end.

Kelley could not swim and attempted to revive King by prodding him with a pitchfork and hoe before authorities arrived, the report states.

The San Bernardino County coroner's report listed the cause of death as drowning "and the contributing cause was combined with ethanol (alcohol) and multiple drug toxicity," DeAnda said.

Toxicology tests showed that King had a blood-alcohol level of .06 and amounts of PCP, cocaine and marijuana in his system, the captain said.

"Mr. King was in a state of drug- and alcohol-induced delirium at the time of the terminal event and either fell or jumped into the swimming pool," DeAnda said. "Obviously, the effects of the drugs and alcohol combined precipitated some kind of cardiac arrhythmia, thus incapacitated Mr. King, and he was unable to save himself."

Arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat.

A neighbor said after King's death that she had heard sobbing from his house earlier that morning. It sounded like someone "really crying, like really deep emotions. ... Like tired or sad, you know?" neighbor Sandra Gardea said.

The report details numerous injuries King sustained over his lifetime, including several birdshot pellets that remained in his body after being shot in 2007 by a shotgun.

King liked to skateboard and some of the injuries seen by medical examiners may have come from falls while playing, his brother Zhan Paul King told investigators.

King's death occurred just months after the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riot brought him renewed attention. In the intervening years he had struggled with substance abuse and had a string of arrests.

But, at the time, he had just published a book about his life and was upbeat.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he told The Associated Press. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

It was an unusually positive view for a man who symbolized the problem of police brutality and had long since lost the $3.8 million he'd been awarded in a civil suit against the city over the beating.

Kelley was a juror on the civil trial.

In March 1991, the then-25-year-old King led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended on a darkened street.

He was stopped by four Los Angeles police officers who were videotaped striking him more than 50 times with batons, kicking him and shooting him with stun guns. He suffered 11 skull fractures, a broken eye socket and facial nerve damage.

A resident recorded the videotape the beating and it was played over and over for a year, inflaming racial tensions.

The officers' trial, which was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, ended on April 29, 1992. A jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges and a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Within hours Los Angeles was engulfed in violence and flames. Fifty-five people died, more than 2,000 were injured and more than $1 billion in damage was done.

At the height of the rioting, King made his famous plea for peace, saying, "Can we all get along?"
