Open Mic Poetry: The last bastion of free speech? | Saugerties Times

Poet Andy Clausen tore it up last Friday night at Caf? Mezzaluna bistro Latino and gallery. Clausen was a contemporary of the Beat poets by his own admission; he even read a passage from a short story he wrote in which he hangs out with Charles Bukowski (called ?Hank? by his sycophants, according to Clausen), and has a short, sweet boxing match with the granddaddy of performance poetry himself. Clausen puts it well in his story ? ?I was 28 in ?74; I whistled two portside jabs,? and a ?stop-left hook whose power ran down my back to my left glute and hamstring, on to his right side, just missing by a couple inches.?

The man knows how to give a good performance. Kind of a pity that the room isn?t packed with people to hear him. Writers Night organizer Judy Lechner tells me there are normally ?a lot more people? in attendance. Aside from that story of performance-poet bravado, Clausen offers two or three poems. Not the poems that people are used to, though, and not read like a poem is normally read, in the slow, intermittent, teacherly fashion.

Clausen flies through his poems with zeal and aplomb, like he?s a brimstone preacher reading from a raggedy old scripture. Legendary poet Allen Ginsberg said of Clausen, ?The frank friendly extravagance of his metaphor and word connection gives Andy Clausen?s poetry a reading interest rare in poetry of any generation.? There is fire and remorse in his voice, and I?m sure if you?re sitting close, a little saliva might be in the mix. Listening to Clausen is refreshing and different. Most people have never heard a poet with conviction turn in a performance like that.

Clausen really enjoys the open mic night. ?It?s a fine thing. I would actually say that the open mic is the last bastion of free speech,? he says, ?and I really like the food.?

The Sept. 14 readers also included Pamela Twining, a Washington D.C. born poet fond of passionate, esoteric diatribes about sisterhood and sex, and Chronogram Magazine music critic Leslie Gerber. Laureates of the Mezzaluna Writers Night series also include short story writer Brent Robison, poet Amanda Gulla, children?s poet Bobbi Katz, famous upstate poet J.J. Clarke, Woodstock-based poet Will Nixon, and Jay Wenk, author of the World War II memoir ?Study War No More.?

?It?s not always poets. I?ve had people read prose, read from their novels, memoirs? that makes it different from others,? says event organizer Judy Lechner.

Mezzaluna is the perfect host for the series. The caf?, right off of Route 212, is low-lit and chilled-out, with a nice menu of cheap-to-reasonable coffee drinks to nurse while you groove on some of the area?s most notable authors, poets, and artists vibe. Lechner, a poet herself who has been ?writing seriously? for 13 years, has been running the Writers Night series for four years. She actually inherited the operation. ?There was something called the world poetry caf? run by a woman named Josie Peralta. She would have people reading in different languages and English. She was from Argentina and she had to go back. Now it?s all in English ? except one time, someone came in and read (Arabic poet) Rumi,? says Lechner.

She tries to run a tight ship with her Writers Night series and knows full well the pitfalls of staging an open mic poetry night. ?Sometimes, at other events, people just get up and start talking,? Lechner says, ?but we manage to avoid that. We try to keep it on a literary level and avoid the nonsense.?

Both Clausen and Lechner notice one thing missing from Writers Night, though: youth. By the looks of it, none of the Writers in attendance Friday were under the age of 40. ?I don?t get that many young poets,? says Lechner.

Clausen says that the reason Writers Nights are under-attended by youth is because they simply aren?t viewed as exciting or endorsed in school. ?How do you get people to come to poetry readings? How do you get them to realize that it?s not only educational, that it can be entertaining and uplifting? How do you get them to realize that it can be just as much fun as live music? And that?s the problem because a lot of the school system is against poetry because they think it?s boring and pointless,? says Clausen. ?You have to try and show that there?s a door, an avenue for youth, that there?s a road that can be taken. I mean, to be frank with you, people used to get laid a lot more at these things. It used to be a lot more social.?

It shouldn?t be too hard for Mezzaluna?s Writers Night series to gain some cub poets and Writers. After all, slam poetry is making a huge comeback as an avenue for creative writing among youth. So if you?re looking to cut your teeth in live poetry or you?re a seasoned vet looking for an outlet for your prose or you?re looking to hobnob with some of the Hudson Valley?s most notable, prominent literary luminaries, come to Writers Night. Contact Judy Lechner (pronounced Lesh-ner) for a spot at the open mic at 246-1384.

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? Tyler Giuliano had no trouble with the law. The teenager loved flying small planes as a Civil Air Patrol cadet and seemed happy as he played an online game with friends Wednesday night. But hours later, authorities say, Tyler was outside wearing a black ski mask and wielding a knife when he was shot by his father, who thought he was a prowler.

No immediate charges were brought against Jeffrey Giuliano, a popular fifth-grade teacher, in the slaying of 15-year-old Tyler, who was gunned down in his aunt's driveway next door to his own home in New Fairfield around 1 a.m. Thursday.

"It's something out of a Hollywood script," said John Hodge, the first selectman, or top elected official, in the town of nearly 14,000 people about 50 miles from New York City. He said he couldn't recall another killing in his eight years on the job.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said the boy had never been in trouble with the law, and some of those who knew him described him as a good kid with an easygoing personality. Investigators and acquaintances said they were at a loss to explain what he was doing outside dressed all in black and carrying a weapon.

"Certainly, that is the major question we are trying to answer at this point," Vance said.

State police said the shooting happened after Jeffrey Giuliano got a call from his sister next door saying that someone might be trying to break into her home in their neighborhood of attractive colonial-style houses. Giuliano grabbed a handgun and went outside to investigate, troopers said.

He confronted someone in a ski mask and opened fire when the person came at him with something shiny in his hand, police said.

When police officers arrived, Tyler was lying dead in the driveway with a knife in his hand, and his father, in a T-shirt and shorts, was sitting on the grass. Detectives informed the elder Giuliano several hours later that he had shot his son, Vance said.

"All in all, it's a tragedy," Vance said.

Police were investigating whether the father's gun was registered.

No one answered the door at Giuliano's home or his sister's.

Tyler was a student at New Fairfield High School and a Civil Air Patrol cadet. Some of those who knew him said he enjoyed spending time with family and flying gliders and small planes. He was adopted by Giuliano and his wife a few years ago, friends said.

One classmate said many students were baffled by what happened.

"I just thought it was so weird when I heard because I knew Tyler, not very well, but he was just a sweet person and he always made everyone laugh. I met him in the chorus room, actually, and he just wasn't the type to do what happened," said Erin Pallas, 16. "So it didn't make sense to us. It doesn't make sense to the student body."

Brett Rasile, a 14-year-old friend, said he and Tyler were playing an online game called Minecraft while talking and laughing together via Skype until about 10 p.m. Wednesday, when Tyler said he had to go to bed. Brett said Tyler wasn't in any trouble that he knew of, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"Same old Tyler. He was perfectly fine," Brett said. "He didn't really leave any evidence, any hints towards what he would do."

Alicia Roy, New Fairfield superintendent of schools, said the elder Giuliano grew up in the town, holds summer music and zoology camps for his students and plays guitar in a local rock band that raises money for charity. He is affectionately known as "Mr. G" around Meeting House Hill School.

"He was the teacher you requested in the fifth grade. He was a great teacher. All the kids loved him," said Rosemary Rasile, Brett's mother.

Brian Wyckoff, 17, said Mr. G "was always walking around with a smile on his face. He always says hi to everyone."

The high school stayed open late to provide grief counseling for students and parents.

"The community is deeply saddened, and our hearts go out to all the family members," Roy said.

Confronted about child porn, man shoots deputies

By Diana Guevara, Sarah Grieco and R. Stickney, NBCSanDiego.com

Updated at 9:19 p.m. ET: A Lakeside, Calif. man confronted about alleged child porn opened fire inside his apartment, shooting and injuring two deputies before shooting himself, according to the man?s girlfriend.

The girlfriend told NBC San Diego that she was getting her two daughters ready for school when she found pornographic pictures of her boyfriend and her two daughters engaged in sex acts on his cell phone. The man has been identified as Daniel Robert Witczak.

The woman headed to the sheriff?s office, showed them the photos and called the suspect on a deputy-tapped phone line to confront him.

Her boyfriend told her that he planned to sell the photos for $50,000 to a child porn site.

The couple had been dating a year, the woman said, who added that her boyfriend was unemployed. She said he planned to support them with the money he would have made with the photos.

Read full coverage at NBCSanDiego.com

Deputies entered the apartment complex to confront the suspect while the woman and her daughters waited outside. The woman said that after the deputies stormed the apartment, her boyfriend shot the two deputies with a high-powered rifle and then shot himself.

Both deputies were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, KPBS.org reported. Lt. Duncan Fraser of the sheriff's office said at a press conference that both men were in surgery.

One patient arriving to a Sharp Memorial Hospital was shirtless on the first gurney coming out of the Lakeside Fire District paramedics van. That ambulance was followed by another carrying a victim covered by medical cloth.

The suspect was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, according to a hospital source. His former employer told NBC News that he had been employed as a mechanic but was fired after a week because he was unreliable.

The shooting occurred at Ashwood and Mapleview streets just south of the?Lakeside Rodeo Grounds, said Lt. Mike Munsey of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Resident Jodi Davis, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, said she heard between 12 and 18 shots.

?Multiple shots, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,? Davis said. ?I said, 'Oh my gosh -- those are gunshots!'"

She said the police ordered her and her neighbors back into their apartments.

Nearby El Capitan High School went into lockdown; students were dismissed at 1:20 p.m.

NBC San Diego reporters at the scene said officers responded from agencies throughout San Diego County.

Army general: Pacific refocus means more exercises

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii (AP) ? The leader of U.S. Army forces in Asia and the Pacific says his soldiers will be able to conduct more exercises with other nations in the region, as the U.S. withdraws from Afghanistan and the military refocuses its attention.

Lt. Gen. Francis J. Wiercinski, the commander of U.S. Army Pacific, said he'd like U.S. soldiers to undertake more exercises with counterparts from nations such as Indonesia, Malaysia and India.

The Army will also be able to have more active duty soldiers, instead of reserves, participate in exercises with allies such as Japan.

"We've been engaged, obviously, in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that's where we've had to focus ? for all the right reasons," Wiercinski told The Associated Press in an interview at his headquarters in Hawaii. "But now that we're having this opportunity, we can get back into the Pacific with our partners here."

The Army has 70,000 soldiers and 12,000 civilians at installations in the Asia-Pacific region.

U.S. military leaders and diplomats have increasingly emphasized the importance of Asia and the Pacific as the region's economies grow and gain clout.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stressed last week that the U.S. pivot to the Pacific isn't aimed at containing or threatening China, which now has the world's second-largest economy after the U.S. But Washington has criticized China for lacking transparency while it has rapidly modernized its military and boosted military spending.

The Pentagon in January issued a new national defense strategy declaring that the U.S. would "rebalance" toward the region, noting U.S. economic and security interests are inextricably linked to developments in the area.

Examples of the strategy are slowly emerging.

Last year, the U.S. and Australia announced an agreement for up to 2,500 U.S. Marines to rotate through a joint military training hub in the northern Australia city of Darwin. The Navy next year plans to begin deploying a littoral combat ship ? a new type of vessel that can operate closer to shore than other ships ? to Singapore.

The Air Force, meanwhile, plans to make greater use of airfields and bombing ranges in the Australian Outback.

Wiercinski said the Army doesn't want to set up new bases. Instead, he spoke of soldiers training with other nations to get a feel for cultures, terrain and interaction with U.S. allies.

"We're not talking about putting bases in other countries or a permanent presence anywhere," he said. "We're talking about rotating ? 30, 40 days at a pop."

Wiercinski pointed to the current deployment of a few dozen soldiers to Tonga for a weeklong disaster relief exercise as the type of drill likely to become more prevalent.

In the drill, which also involves Australia, France and New Zealand, Tonga calls the U.S. for help after being hit by a major earthquake and tsunami. The Army sends soldiers to the Pacific island nation within 24 hours to assess the situation and report what help Tonga needs.

"Just that, the ability to do that, demonstrates our capability, shows the Tongan government and all the neighbors in the area that we're backing up what we say we can do," Wiercinski said.

Lawyers: Iowa CEO to plead guilty to $200M fraud

(AP) ? The founder of an Iowa brokerage has signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in which he admits to carrying out a $200 million fraud and embezzlement scheme that bankrupted his company and could result in him spending the rest of his life in prison, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Russ Wasendorf Sr. will plead guilty to mail fraud, embezzling customer funds and two counts of making false statements to regulators. U.S Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles confirmed the agreement but hasn't ruled on the matter.

Prosecutors said the agreement calls for Wasendorf, 64, to be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.

Details of the agreement were made public during a hearing in federal court in Cedar Rapids called to determine whether Wasendorf should be freed from jail pending his plea hearing and sentencing.

Scoles said he would rule by Friday on whether to release Wasendorf pending sentencing, which hasn't been scheduled. The judge also plans to schedule a hearing soon to allow a formal guilty plea.

Prosecutors have asked the judge to not release Wasendorf, who listened intently as FBI agent William Langdon laid out the case against him.

Langdon recounted how Wasendorf was found July 9 outside the company's headquarters in Cedar Falls after a failed suicide attempt in his vehicle. He said Wasendorf had connected a hose to his exhaust pipe, took prescription drugs and drank alcohol.

Langdon read out loud a note that Wasendorf left behind in which the businessman said he started forging bank records 20 years ago to prop up his struggling firm. Wasendorf wrote that he used computer software, scanners and printers to make convincing forgeries of bank statements to fool regulators about how much money the company had.

Langdon said the statements in the suicide note were corroborated during a search of his office, where investigators found several fake "cut-and-paste" bank records Wasendorf had created. Wasendorf has also met with regulators and investigators on multiple occasions since his arrest to explain the fraud, which he "knew would one day catch up with him," Langdon said.

FBI agents arrested Wasendorf days after the suicide attempt while he was hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and by then court records show he had already been cooperating with investigators.

After his arrest, Wasendorf waived his right to an immediate detention hearing, but he requested one last week.

Defense attorney Jane Kelly said the plea agreement leaves open how much prison time will be recommended for Wasendorf under federal sentencing guidelines. She indicated it would likely be far less than the maximum 50 years.

Nonetheless, Linda Livingston, a Lutheran pastor who has counseled Wasendorf in jail, testified that he has accepted the likelihood of spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Livingston said he was relieved that his fraud was uncovered and dedicated himself to trying to recover as much money as possible for his customers.

Livingston said she and her husband, former high school classmates of Wasendorf, have agreed to allow him to live in their home if he is released.

Assistant U.S Attorney Peter Deegan argued that Wasendorf remained a serious risk to commit suicide or flee if released. He said Wasendorf "has gone from being a hero to a villain" and signed a plea deal that will likely put him in prison until his death.

"What incentive does he have to show up in court?" Deegan asked.

Tuesday's development came as regulators try to unravel the complicated finances of Peregrine Financial Group, Inc., and partially compensate customers who have not been able to access their funds for two months. The trustee overseeing the company's bankruptcy outlined a plan last week for an initial distribution of $123 million in assets to about 17,000 customers, who would receive 30 percent to 40 percent of the assets they held with the firm. The payments would start by the end of September.

But the company's regulator, the U.S. Commodities Futures Trading Commission, raised concerns about the plan in a filing Sunday, arguing payments should not be processed until accounts can be verified as valid. The commission said its preliminary investigation uncovered more than $45 million in "fictitious bookkeeping entries and unusual activity" in customer accounts.

"The CFTC does not favor unnecessarily delaying customer distributions, and believes that the innocent customers of the Debtor should be compensated for their losses as soon as reasonable and practicable," agency lawyers wrote. "Nonetheless, caution is warranted to ensure that the books and records of the Debtor may be relied upon to avoid the possibility of distributions based on fictitious data."

A hearing on the plan from trustee Ira Bodenstein, which would hold back $58 million in company assets, is set for Wednesday in federal bankruptcy court in Chicago. Bodenstein said that additional distributions will occur but that no one will get 100 percent of their money back.

(AP) ? A bizarre love triangle is to blame for a midair explosives scare that led to an aborted flight and a man being taken into custody twice in two states within about 12 hours, authorities say.

The curious case of Christopher Shell began Thursday in Philadelphia, apparently triggered by a Facebook photo he posted of his ex-girlfriend and fueled by his feud with her and her new boyfriend. It ended Friday in Texas.

In that time, Philadelphia police recalled Shell's Dallas-bound flight and marched him off the aircraft at gunpoint; Shell cleared his name; authorities arrested the new beau, Kenneth W. Smith Jr., on charges of making a hoax threat about Shell and explosives; and Shell was taken into custody again on drug charges when he finally reached Texas to celebrate his 29th birthday.

Both Shell and Smith posted bonds Friday in their respective cases. Shell declined to comment. Smith's lawyer, Bill Brennan, described his client as "embarrassed" by the consequences of the alleged threat.

"My client is very, very sobered by the amount of attention this has received," Brennan said after Smith's initial appearance in federal court in Philadelphia. "He's not very happy about it."

Passengers weren't very happy either when the scare rerouted US Airways Flight 1267 on Thursday. They were about 90 miles into their trip from Philadelphia to Dallas/Fort Worth when the aircraft turned around, allegedly due to technical problems.

After landing back at Philadelphia Airport, heavily armed law enforcement officers boarded the plane and removed Shell. During questioning, he told authorities of the romantic feud, which involved hostile text messages with his ex and encounters with Smith, according to a federal affidavit.

Shell gave officers the name of Smith's workplace. And upon arrival, authorities said Smith acknowledged calling airport police from a payphone to say that Shell was carrying liquid explosives.

Smith said he did it to "avenge" his new girlfriend because Shell had posted a compromising picture of her on Facebook, the affidavit said.

"It is the kind of photo that would incense a boyfriend," said Brennan, Smith's lawyer.

Smith, 26, of Philadelphia, was charged with conveying false information that interfered with aviation and using an instrument of commerce ? the phone ? to do so.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and possible restitution.

Police stressed Thursday that Shell, who lives in Philadelphia, was blameless for the airplane scare. He continued traveling later that day to his home state of Texas, where he planned to celebrate his birthday with friends and family. But authorities arrested him when he arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.

Collin County authorities said Shell had outstanding warrants for two drug-possession charges, less than 2 ounces of marijuana and less than 28 grams of a controlled substance.

1st night of DNC bests RNC in TV ratings race

(AP) ? Michelle Obama has bragging rights over Ann Romney in one early measurement ? television ratings.

The Nielsen Co. said about 26.2 million people watched the opening night of the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., where the first lady was the featured speaker.

Last week, Nielsen said 22.3 million watched the first night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., where potential first lady Ann Romney talked about her husband, Mitt. The same number of viewers watched the Democrats' first night in 2008, when Michelle Obama was also the featured speaker.

NBC was the most popular network during the 10 p.m. ET hour on Tuesday, with just over 5 million viewers. CBS had 3.27 million and ABC had 3.24 million, Nielsen said. PBS, which broadcast throughout prime time, had 3.8 million viewers during the 10 p.m. hour.

Cable television ratings indicate the degree to which viewers seek ideological comfort zones. Fox News Channel, which has shows that appeal to conservatives, had the smallest audience of the three cable news and three broadcast networks, with 2.4 million viewers. During opening night of last week's GOP convention, Fox topped everyone with 6.9 million, or nearly three times as many people.

The left-leaning MSNBC had 4.1 million viewers on Monday, up sharply from the 1.5 million viewers who watched the network cover the first night of the GOP. It's also nearly twice the audience MSNBC had four years ago, when the network was less partisan.

CNN seeks to be nonpartisan, but it also is more popular with Democrats. Its Tuesday audience of 3.89 million more than doubled CNN's coverage of opening night in Tampa last week (1.5 million).

Michelle Obama was a big hit Monday in a measurement by the social media network Twitter. The company said she was responsible for at least 28,003 tweets per minute shortly after she delivered her speech.

By contrast, the peak moment at the GOP convention was 14,289 tweets per minute during Mitt Romney's acceptance speech, Twitter said. Ann Romney's peak was 6,195 per minute, said Elaine Filadelo, Twitter spokeswoman. The company measures the volume of tweets through the use of hashtags, names and phrases, so it's possible the number could be larger in all cases.

It's not exactly clear why Michelle Obama's tweet volume was so much higher than any of the Republicans. The first lady is better known and active on Twitter herself, Filadelo said. The White House also released a photo of President Barack Obama watching his wife talk along with their two daughters, which was frequently re-tweeted.

Privacy, Masks and Religion | Center for Internet and Society

?

Photo:?Basking & masking. In China, where sun tan is negatively stigmatized, beach goers wear masks.

One of the most significant developments for privacy law over the past few years has been the rapid erosion of privacy in public. As recently as a decade ago, we benefitted from a fair degree of?de facto?privacy when walking the streets of a city or navigating a shopping mall. To be sure, we were in plain sight; someone could have seen and followed us; and we would certainly be noticed if we took off our clothes. After all, a public space was always less private than a home. Yet with the notable exception of celebrities, we would have generally benefitted from a degree of anonymity or?obscurity. A great deal of effort, such as surveillance by a private investigator or team of FBI agents was required to reverse that. [This isn?t a post about?US v. Jones, which I will write about later].

Now, with mobile tracking devices always on in our pockets; with GPS enabled cars; surveillance cameras linked to facial recognition technologies;?smart signage?(billboards that target passersby based on their gender, age, or eventually identity); and devices with embedded RFID chips ? privacy in public is becoming a remnant of the past.

Location tracking is already a powerful tool in the hands of both law enforcement and private businesses, offering a wide array of localized services from restaurant recommendations to traffic reports.?Ambient social location apps, such as Glancee and Banjo, are increasingly popular, creating a social context based on users? location and enabling users to meet and interact.

Facial recognition is becoming more prevalent. This technology too can be used by law enforcement for surveillance or by businesses to analyze certain characteristics of their customers, such as their age, gender or mood (facial detection) or downright identify them (facial recognition). One such service, which was?recently tested, allows individuals to check-in to a location on Facebook through facial scanning.

Essentially, our face is becoming equivalent to a cookie, the ubiquitous online tracking device. Yet unlike cookies, faces are difficult to erase. And while cellular phones could in theory be left at home, we very rarely travel without them. How will individuals react to a world in which all traces of privacy in public are lost?

To begin with, they may seek legal redress for invasion of privacy. Yet I am not optimistic about their chances; indeed, some may argue that given the available technologies, businesses and government should be mandated to monitor public spaces to help keep unscrupulous individuals at bay (starting with terrorists and pedophiles, but then expanding to criminals and perhaps also the mentally ill). Failure to do so may result in liability for negligence: ?why did you not protect me if you could??

Absent legal protection, individuals may embrace privacy enhancing technologies (PETs). One such (admittedly low-tech) PET is a?mask. In a world with ubiquitous facial recognition, more and more people are likely to wear masks. After all, if a face is like an http cookie, a mask is like a ?do not track? (DNT) header.?

You might think that mask wearing in public will create a ?market for lemons? ? only the bad seeds will wear the masks; after all ? the rest of us have ?nothing to hide?. Yet as?Dan Solove?has so expertly?shown, we need not have ?something to hide? in order to care for our privacy. Privacy, solitude, freedom from an ?unwanted gaze? ? reflect a natural human need; it?s not even strictly human ? as cat owners know, animals sometimes need privacy too.

This only complicates matters, since it means that the bad seeds will be able to blend into the mask-wearing crowd. Policymakers may respond by legislating?anti-mask laws. They would reason that wearing masks in public is different than delivering a DNT signal online. A mask-bearing individual may intimidate passersby. (Although this is surely related to existing social norms and might change as masks become more common). Masks reduce accountability; but then again, so does?online anonymity.

Anti-mask laws, in turn, may prove to be problematic given their infringement on religious freedom of, for example,?Muslim women. Perhaps an exemption should be crafted for such purposes then. But who is to say that privacy is not a legitimate religion? In fact, I have?argued elsewhere?that privacy discourse today often takes on a religious zeal.

Tutu: Bush, Blair should face trial at the Hague

LONDON (AP) ? Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu called Sunday for Tony Blair and George Bush to face prosecution at the International Criminal Court for their role in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq

Tutu, the retired Anglican Church's archbishop of South Africa, wrote in an op-ed piece for The Observer newspaper that the ex-leaders of Britain and the United States should be made to "answer for their actions."

The Iraq war "has destabilized and polarized the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history," wrote Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984.

"Those responsible for this suffering and loss of life should be treading the same path as some of their African and Asian peers who have been made to answer for their actions in the Hague," he added.

The Hague, Netherlands, based court is the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal and has been in operation for 10 years. So far it has launched prosecutions only in Africa, including in Sudan, Congo, Libya and Ivory Coast.

Tutu has long been a staunch critic of the Iraq war, while others opposed to the conflict ? including playwright Harold Pinter ? have previously called for Bush and Blair to face prosecution at the Hague.

"The then-leaders of the U.S. and U.K. fabricated the grounds to behave like playground bullies and drive us further apart. They have driven us to the edge of a precipice where we now stand ? with the specter of Syria and Iran before us," said Tutu, who last week withdrew from a conference in South Africa due to Blair's presence at the event.

While the International Criminal Court can handle cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, it does not currently have the jurisdiction to prosecute crimes of aggression. Any potential prosecution over the Iraq war would likely come under the aggression category.

The U.S. is among nations which do not recognize the International Criminal Court.

In response to Tutu, Blair said he had great respect for the archbishop's work to tackle apartheid in South Africa, but accused him of repeating inaccurate criticisms of the Iraq war.

"To repeat the old canard that we lied about the intelligence is completely wrong as every single independent analysis of the evidence has shown," Blair said. "And to say that the fact that Saddam (deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein) massacred hundreds of thousands of his citizens is irrelevant to the morality of removing him is bizarre."

However, Blair said that "in a healthy democracy people can agree to disagree."

In Britain, a two-year long inquiry examining the buildup to the Iraq war and its conduct is yet to publish its final report. The panel took evidence from political leaders including Blair, military chiefs and intelligence officers. Two previous British studies into aspects of the war cleared Blair's government of wrongdoing.

The Iraq war was bitterly divisive in the U.K. and saw large public demonstrations. However, Blair subsequently won a 2005 national election, though with a reduced majority.

Washington state warns Catholic bishop to stop fund-raising against gay marriage

Washington state law prevents organizations, including churches, from raising money from individuals to give to a political campaign. A Catholic bishop has been fund-raising in opposition of same-sex marriage.

By Jonathan Kaminsky,?Reuters / August 30, 2012

Gov. Chris Gregoire, (l.), is embraced by Rep. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle, after the House voted to legalize gay marriage in Washington state in Feb. 8, 2012, in Olympia, Wash. Now, the state government has ordered a Catholic Bishop to stop a fundraising campaign against gay marriage that violates the state's campaign finance rules.

Washington?state regulators have warned a Roman Catholic bishop that his diocese risks running afoul of state campaign finance laws if he follows through with a planned fund-raising effort opposing same-sex marriage on the November ballot.

State law prohibits organizations, including churches, from raising money from individuals to give to political campaigns, said?Lori Anderson, a spokeswoman for the state's Public Disclosure Commission.

"It's not because it's a church. It's because it's not a stand-alone individual," Anderson said on Thursday.

The commission was calling into question a recent letter from Bishop?Joseph Tyson?to Yakima-area pastors urging them to distribute donation envelopes to parishioners during the weekend of Sept. 8-9.

The money would go to Preserve Marriage?Washington, the campaign to defeat legalization of same-sex marriage on the state's November ballot.

The Democratic-controlled?Washington Legislature?voted this year to legalize same-sex marriage, and Governor?Chris Gregoire, a Democrat and a Catholic, signed the measure into law during in February.

But the law was blocked from taking effect as scheduled in June when opponents submitted a petition for a repeal referendum on the November ballot. Referendum 74, subsequently certified as having collected enough signatures to qualify, asks voters to approve or reject the gay marriage bill enacted in February.

Tyson's letter instructs parish priests not to open the envelopes once they are turned back in, but to place them into a pre-addressed security envelope to be mailed directly to Preserve Marriage, according to local media reports.

"It's not our envelope," Tyson told local television station KIMA-TV. "We're not collecting the money, and we're not taking the money. Preserve Marriage?Washington?is doing that. We're going to follow the state law."

But Anderson said she was not swayed.

"That can't happen under our state law," she told Reuters. "It doesn't matter if they haven't looked at the contributions."
