Today in History

Today is Tuesday, April 30, the 120th day of 2013. There are 245 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On April 30, 1973, President Richard Nixon announced the resignations of top aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst and White House counsel John Dean, who was actually fired.

On this date:

In 1789, George Washington took office in New York as the first president of the United States.

In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 60 million francs, the equivalent of about $15 million.

In 1812, Louisiana became the 18th state of the Union.

In 1863, the design of the Great Seal of the Confederate States of America was approved by the Confederate Congress.

In 1900, engineer John Luther "Casey" Jones of the Illinois Central Railroad died in a train wreck near Vaughan, Miss., after staying at the controls in a successful effort to save the passengers.

In 1938, a precursor to the cartoon character Bugs Bunny first appeared in the Warner Bros. animated short "Porky's Hare Hunt."

In 1939, the New York World's Fair officially opened with a ceremony that included an address by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1945, as Russian troops approached his Berlin bunker, Adolf Hitler committed suicide along with his wife of one day, Eva Braun.

In 1968, New York City police forcibly removed student demonstrators occupying five buildings at Columbia University.

In 1983, blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters died in Westmont, Ill., at age 68.

In 1988, Gen. Manuel Noriega, waving a machete, vowed at a rally to keep fighting U.S. efforts to oust him as Panama's military ruler.

In 1993, top-ranked women's tennis player Monica Seles was stabbed in the back during a match in Hamburg, Germany, by a man who described himself as a fan of second-ranked German player Steffi Graf. (The man, convicted of causing grievous bodily harm, was given a suspended sentence.)

Ten years ago: International mediators presented Israeli and Palestinian leaders with a new Middle East "road map," a U.S.-backed blueprint for ending 31 months of violence and establishing a Palestinian state. Mahmoud Abbas (mahk-MOOD' ah-BAHS') took office as Palestinian prime minister. The U.S. Navy withdrew from its disputed Vieques bombing range in Puerto Rico, prompting celebrations by islanders.

Five years ago: The Federal Reserve cut interest rates for a seventh straight time, reducing the federal funds rate a quarter-point to 2 percent. An avalanche in Italy's northwestern Alps killed five French ski-mountaineers.

One year ago: President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, meeting at the White House, decried aggressive acts from North Korea, including a recent failed rocket launch, and vowed to maintain a unified front against such provocations. A ferry carrying more than 300 people capsized in a river in northeast India, killing some 100 people and leaving about as many missing.

Today's Birthdays: Actress Cloris Leachman is 87. Singer Willie Nelson is 80. Actor Burt Young is 73. Singer Bobby Vee is 70. Movie director Allan Arkush is 65. Actor Perry King is 65. Searching for the animal within

In an attempt to ease the brain recently, I did a few online tests, trying to find out what real-life animal fits my personality.

One test said I was a mole, another a racoon. Then there was the one that said I was a lion. Another said I was a hermit crab and the fifth said I was a rabbit. There was one that said I was a snake, but apparently I had just taken a previous test again. Note the completely different result the second time. So anyway, it means yours could truly be either small furry creatures (not sure if I see the similarities there), the king of the jungle (obviously that one's wrong), a crustacean (I can be crabby) or Bugs Bunny's cousin (I like carrots but not that much). My search continues.

But while some of us are looking for some kind of connection to the animal kingdom, others occasionally resort to man's more primal tendencies. Take Liverpool forward Luis Suarez for instance, who, for the second time in his career (that we know of), has been reprimanded for biting an opponent. The first was in 2010. If there is ever a zombie apocalypse and mindless beings start feeding on all forms of live meat, he would be first in line. Perhaps he's suffering from a protein deficiency, like a mild form of vampirism, and just needs an injection of human DNA every few years. So circa 2016, he'll be munching on somebody else.

Now one person who has come to the Uruguayan's defence is Mike Tyson, who infamously bit off a part of Evander Holyfield's ear during a boxing match. In true Tyson fashion, he said 'stuff' happens and everybody will get over it. And he's right. But while I can understand trying to get the better of an opponent, going all Wolfman on him is a bit extreme.

Feral footballers

At the risk of making a meal of the situation, I hope the authorities make an example of him to all the other feral footballers. On the other hand (or jaw in this case), I think I know what went through his mind as he sunk his incisors into Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic's arm. If I'm fighting all game long against an opponent who is constantly a thorn in my side, I might lash out too. I probably wouldn't resort to toothy tactics, but I would try something.

I will say this about Suarez though - his taste seems to be diverse. Ivanovic is Serbian, while the first guy he bit, Otman Bakkal, is a Dutchman of Moroccan origin. He just needs to bite a Latino, an Asian and a Scandinavian and he should be satisfied. Belly full!

SupplyShift Helps Companies Understand The Environmental Impact Of Their Supply Chain

TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 - Day 2For large companies that have a long list of suppliers that they work with, it’s not only difficult to manage communication with all of them, but understanding the environmental impact of each supplier is next to impossible. It’s not a sexy space to work in by any means but the addressable market is comprised of Fortune 500 companies and the government itself, which is bound to mandates involving environmental sustainability when working with suppliers. SupplyShift is a backend tool for those companies and organizations to track everything that’s going on with suppliers, which are usually scattered throughout the world. These buyers are collecting sustainability data but don’t currently have the tools to help them reduce risk exposure. What SupplyShift really is is a network which allows them to understand their “supply chain footprint” which will make suppliers actually care more about how they present themselves, heating up competing among them. The team, led by CEO and cofounder Alexander Gershenson, has been working on these problems as a consultant and it was time to build their work out as an actual product. Currently, Ecoshift, the consulting arm for the team, is already working with companies like Microsoft, Target and Sprint on supply chain management. The type of risk that companies experience with suppliers are the situation that Mattel went through with lead paint, where 1M toys had to be recalled. As far as how suppliers can affect how the public thinks about your company, look no further than Apple’s relationship with Foxconn, regarding their labor practices. You get the point. SupplyShift will track all of these potential risks, sharing them among the network of companies that use it. Why now? Gershenson told me: “The market situation changed radically in the last three years, and sustainability is becoming a key part of corporate strategy, but corporations and the government do not have the tools to address that need. SupplyShift takes care of that.” The main component that makes SupplyShift different from its competitors is that the companies who use the service are also paying to enroll their suppliers. This is key, because suppliers either won’t, or can’t afford to enroll themselves in similar services. By putting this in the hands of the companies who are selling goods, the database of suppliers will grow at a more rapid rate. This isn’t a social network for professionals, photo-sharing apps for tweens, but it’s a

Subaru recalls more than 10,000 Forester wagons

(AP) ? Subaru is recalling just over 10,000 of its 2014 Forester wagons because the floor mats can interfere with the clutch, brake or gas pedals.

The recall affects Foresters made from January 2013 through March. The company says the floor mats can curl when exposed to heat.

The problem was discovered in cars arriving at a port in Vancouver, Washington.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the mats could distract the driver or interfere with operation of the car.

Subaru traced the problem to improperly manufactured backing on the mats.

Dealers will replace all four mats free of charge. It will begin notifying owners in April.

Lawmakers press Obama to take action on Syria

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican senators on Sunday pressed U.S. President Barack Obama to intervene in Syria's civil war, saying America could attack Syrian air bases with missiles but should not send in ground troops.

Pressure is mounting on the White House to do more to help Syrian rebels fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, which the Obama administration last week said had probably used chemical arms in the conflict.

Neutralizing the government forces' air advantage over the rebels "could turn the tide of battle pretty quickly," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"One way you can stop the Syrian air force from flying is to bomb the Syrian air bases with cruise missiles," the South Carolina senator said.

Graham said international action was needed to bring the conflict to a close but "You don't need boots on the ground from the U.S. point of view."

More than 70,000 people have died in Syria's two-year-old civil war. So far, the United States has limited its involvement to providing non-lethal aid to rebels.

Obama said on Friday the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a "game changer" for the United States, but made clear he was in no rush to intervene on the basis of evidence he said was still preliminary.

The U.S. fears anti-Assad Islamist rebels affiliated to al Qaeda could seize the chemical weapons, and Washington and its allies have discussed scenarios where tens of thousands of ground troops go into Syria if Assad's government falls.

INTERNATIONAL FORCE

Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, said the United States should step up its support for Syrian rebels even if it turns out that Assad's forces have not used poison gas in the conflict.

"We could use Patriot (missile) batteries and cruise missiles," the Arizona lawmaker, an influential voice on military issues in the U.S. Senate, told NBC's Meet The Press.

McCain said an "international force" should also be readied to go into Syria to secure stocks of chemical weapons.

"There are number of caches of these chemical weapons. They cannot fall into the hands of the jihadists," he said.

At the same time, McCain said it would be a mistake for American ground troops to enter Syria because that "would turn the people against us."

After fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, sending U.S. troops into another conflict would be politically unpalatable in America.

The Pentagon is also wary of U.S. involvement in Syria. The president's top uniformed military adviser, General Martin Dempsey, said last month he could not see a U.S. military option with an "understandable outcome" there.

Syria in July acknowledged for the first time that it possessed chemical and biological weapons, saying they could be used if the country faced foreign intervention. However, Syria has denied any use of chemical arms in the civil war and has said it would not use them against its own citizens.

EGM Review: Star Trek: The Video Game | EGMNOW

Let me make this clear: I love Star Trek. The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, even Enterprise. And the J.J. Abrams reboot? Love it, love it, love it. I tell you this because I want you to understand that Namco Bandai?s Star Trek was reviewed in the best possible light?in the hands of a man with photos of himself sitting in Picard?s chair on the bridge of the Enterprise-D, a man with the biggest goddamn crush on Chris Pine this side of the fella?s girlfriend.

I do not love Star Trek: The Video Game. I do not like Star Trek: The Video Game. I don?t even begrudgingly respect Star Trek: The Video Game.

Digital Extremes fails to take Star Trek beyond exactly what it is: another half-assed attempt at a licensed game. On paper, I can see the allure?an interactive way to bridge the gap between the 2009 flick and its upcoming sequel, Star Trek: Into Darkness. Unfortunately, it seems Digital Extremes was under direct orders from Paramount to shove far too many genre styles that tenuously resonate with Star Trek into this title?genres in which the developer clearly has no expertise. Or perhaps they simply weren?t given enough development time. My money?s on a bit of both, since I know Digital Extremes can put together a better product. Dark Sector may not have been particularly noteworthy videogame, but it was still solid, and The Darkness II was a strong shooter.

But Star Trek? It?s a mess.

I could perhaps forgive this shameless attempt at capitalizing on a brand name if it added something to the overall fiction established in the reboot. Unfortunately, Star Trek doesn?t expand upon the new universe in any way, let alone an interesting way. It is, primarily, lazy fan service that delivers a classic TOS villain?the Gorn?to an audience that, really, couldn?t care less about them. Sure, the Gorn get a new, more menacing look, but at the end of the day, Star Trek is little more than a retelling of The Wrath of Khan?but without the Khan (or wrath, for that matter).

Is it nice to hear Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin reprise their roles? Certainly. Do they phone it in half the time? Very much so. And when you strip away the fiction, all that?s left is a generic third-person cover-based shooter with zero meaningful RPG elements?the one thing absolutely necessary to make a pseudo-authentic Star Trek experience. In theory, on-rails flying sequences, turret-style spaceship battles, platforming, and hacking minigames read like a pretty robust adventure, but in execution, they fall flat; these elements manifest in their most basic forms. At no point does anything in Star Trek feel expertly crafted?or even competently crafted. Ultimately, the game is about as functional as someone stuck in an iron lung.

When Star Trek works, it?s playable. Not enjoyable, but playable. But then the plague of bugs and glitches crop up?objective markers fail to load, the targeting reticule stays onscreen during cinematic scenes like a stain, command prompts never leave or fail to appear (necessitating a checkpoint reload), and broken enemy AI shatters the immersion. Twice during my playthrough, the camera started shaking violently as though its handler had the DTs. These issues pile up until it?s impossible to take Star Trek seriously.

The only aspect of Kirk and Spock?s Big Shooting Adventure that feels remotely reminiscent of something thoughtfully Star Trek in style is the tricorder, which is used to hack computer terminals, doors, and other random tech. For the most part, this is performed solely to gain experience for largely inconsequential, useless upgrades. Occasionally, the tricorder is used in a more explorative way?like finding an alternate route when the main path is blocked off. But 75 percent of Star Trek is sloppy, third-person cover-based shooting that?s beyond repetitive.

All of this culminates in an ending that feels appropriately unceremonious?as though Digital Extremes knew exactly how gamers would feel after taking down the game?s tedious Big Bad. ?Get us out of here, Sulu,? commands Kirk. Smash cut to the credit roll?we?re done here.

Get us out of here indeed, Mr. Sulu.

Despite all its promise, Star Trek proves to be a spectacular sci-fi letdown: bugs and glitches galore, unresponsive controls, and a phoned-in story traveling at warp zero. Set phasers to ?disappointment.?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3: Oh, Another One?

Just in case you thought Samsung didn't offer enough variety in its tablet range, its gone ahead and launched yet another. This 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 is brand new and, um, like virtually every other Samsung tablet that's gone before it.

The third iteration of Samsung's first tablet attempt, this little seven-incher packs a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage, 3-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front facer, and Android 4.1. A fairly bland spec list to accompany what is quite a bland product.

The Wi-Fi version of the Tab 3 will roll out across the world in May, with a 3G model following in June. There's currently no word on pricing, but it will probably be comparable to the existing Tab 2. Not that you'd notice the difference. [Samsung via Engadget]

Singing humpback whales tracked on Northwest Atlantic feeding ground

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Male humpback whales sing complex songs in tropical waters during the winter breeding season, but they also sing at higher latitudes at other times of the year. NOAA researchers have provided the first detailed description linking humpback whale movements to acoustic behavior on a feeding ground in the Northwest Atlantic.

Findings from the study, published April 10 in the journal PLOS ONE, demonstrate the potential applications of passive acoustic tracking and monitoring for marine mammal conservation and management.

Co-author Sofie Van Parijs, who heads the passive acoustics group at the Woods Hole Laboratory of NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), says this study is not so much about biology, but about acoustic methods.

"We have monitored and acoustically recorded whale sounds for years, and are now able to 'mine' these data using new computer software applications and methods, " said Van Parijs. "Passive acoustic tracking has enabled us to localize humpback whale song to study the movements of individual whales, and to relate the singing to specific behaviors. This has never before been accomplished for singing humpbacks on a northwest Atlantic feeding ground."

"Passive acoustic tracking of humpback whales and other cetacean species provides an opportunity to collect data on movement patterns that are difficult?or impossible?to obtain using other techniques," said lead author Joy Stanistreet, who worked with Van Parjis and co-author Denise Risch at the NEFSC's Woods Hole Laboratory at the time of the study. Stanistreet is currently a graduate student at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, N.C.

Since 2007, NEFSC researchers have used year-round passive acoustic monitoring to study ocean noise in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a feeding ground for humpback whales and other marine mammal species in the southern Gulf of Maine. Humpback whales typically frequent the sanctuary between April and December and feed on sand lance and other small schooling fish. Humpback whale singing in the sanctuary usually occurs from April through May, following the spring migration from southern waters, and from August to December before the return fall migration. During the summer, humpbacks remain in the sanctuary but generally do not sing while they feed.

The researchers used data from acoustic recordings collected from an array of 10 bottom-mounted marine autonomous recording units (MARUs). Continuous 24-hour recordings units were deployed in the sanctuary for four consecutive three-month periods during 2009. The MARUs were placed three to six miles apart, and the arrays shifted seasonally to areas within the sanctuary having high whale concentrations.

Humpback whale songs were recorded in distinct time periods during spring and fall. No songs were recorded during summer and winter, although humpback whales remained in the area. Songs were most common in the spring, and occurrences of singing increased significantly before and after migration periods.

Forty-three song sessions, each lasting from 30 minutes to eight hours, were used to track individual singing whales. Most of the singers were actively swimming; the patterns and rates of their movement ranged from slow meandering to a faster directional movement. In one case, two singers were tracked at the same time, suggesting a potential reaction by one singer to the presence of the other.

Marine mammal researchers could also use passive acoustic localization and tracking methods to better understand the geographic distribution, abundance, and densities of cetacean species, many of which are threatened by human activities. These applications may help inform and enhance marine mammal conservation and management efforts

The study was funded by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program, a collaboration of federal agencies that provides leadership and coordination of national oceanographic research and education initiatives.

Clarifying the effect of stem cell therapy on cancer

Apr. 28, 2013 ? Injection of human stem cells into mice with tumors slowed down tumor growth, finds research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), isolated from bone marrow, caused changes in blood vessels supplying the tumor, and it is this modification of blood supply which seems to impact tumor growth.

The use of stem cells in treating cancer has been controversial, with some studies finding that stem cells force tumors to enter programmed cell death. However other studies find that stem cells actually promote tumor growth by inducing infiltration of new blood vessels. In attempting to sort out this puzzle researchers from INSERM groups at Universit? Joseph Fourier in collaboration with CHU de Grenoble investigated the impact of MSC on already established subcutaneous or lung metastasis in mice.

For both the subcutaneous and lung tumors, injection of MSC reduced cell division, consequently slowing the rate of tumor growth. Part of the mode of action of stem cells therefore appears to be due to with angiogenesis, but the mechanism behind this is still unclear.

Claire Rome who led this study explained, "We found that MSC altered vasculature inside the tumor -- although new blood vessels were generated, overall they were longer and fewer than in untreated tumors. This could be restricting the oxygen and nutrients to the tumor, limiting cell division." She continued, "Our study confirms others which propose that stem cells, in particular MSC, might be one way forwards in treating cancer."

Commenting on this study Celia Gomes, from the University of Coimbra, said, "One of the interesting questions this study raises is when MSC promote tumor growth and when they restrict it. The answer seems to be timing -- this study looks at already established tumors, while others, which find that MSC increase growth, tend to be investigating new tumors. This is a first step in the path to identifying exactly which patients might benefit from stem cell therapy and who will not."

TSX slides as mining, energy issues stumble

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock market finished lower on Friday as natural resource stocks slumped and market sentiment soured following U.S. economic growth data that fell short of expectations. U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent rate, an increase from the fourth quarter's dismal 0.4 percent pace but shy of the 3 percent growth analysts were hoping for. The weaker-than-expected data in Canada's biggest trading partner weighed on Canadian stocks.

Japan's ANA takes its first 787 back into the air since grounding

TOKYO (Reuters) - All Nippon Airways , the Japanese launch customer for Boeing Co's 787, flew its first Dreamliner in more than three months on Sunday to test reinforced batteries installed by the U.S. aircraft maker. The ANA flight was the second by an airline since aviation regulators on Friday gave permission for 787 operations to restart after batteries on two of them overheated in mid January. One was on an ANA plane in Japan and another on a Japan Airlines jet parked at Boston's Logan airport.

(AP) ? The annual gathering not far from the White House brings together journalists, government officials, politicians and media personalities for what's usually an evening of light-hearted banter and celebrity gawking.

Presidents are made fun of and they poke at themselves, too.

But President Barack Obama's scheduled appearance Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was coming at a somber time, nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon bombing and 10 days after a devastating fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas.

In 1995, in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, President Bill Clinton dispensed with the traditional presidential humor to remember victims and praise journalists for their coverage of the explosion.

Coincidentally, this year's dinner entertainer, comedian and late-night TV talk-show host Conan O'Brien, also headlined that 1995 gala.

Obama spent the afternoon on the golf course at Andrews Air Force Base with former U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and two White House aides.

Six journalists, including Associated Press White House Correspondent Julie Pace, were to be awarded prizes for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Pace won the Merriman Smith Award for a print journalist for coverage on deadline.

ABC's Terry Moran was the winner of the broadcast Merriman Smith Award for deadline reporting.

Reporters Jim Morris, Chris Hamby and Ronnie Greene of the Center for Public Integrity won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

Abusive parents still meeting children - timesofmalta.com

Photo: Reuters

Decisions being taken by a government advisory board on children in care, not to allow abusive parents to meet children during supervised access visits, are sometimes ignored, according to a social worker.

There were occasions when the Children and Young Persons Advisory Board recommended that a child who was living in foster care, for example, did not meet his or her abusive parent during family access time.

However, the abusive parents still turned up for the visit leaving the child traumatised.

This was recounted by social worker Daniella Zerafa during a conference entitled The Rights of the Child in Foster Care.

Ms Zerafa, who also lectures at the University of Malta, presented the case study of a fostered child, who she referred to as Katya.

The true story highlighted shortcomings in the system such as delays in deciding whether to issue a care order to remove a child from an abusive family.

Another problem highlighted was the fact that although Maltese law technically allowed the Government to strip parents of parental rights, in cases of abuse, this was not done in practice.

As a result, children were not being allowed to be adopted and live in a stable home.

During the conference Family Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said that her Government put the rights of children at the centre of its policies. She will work to ensure that children are given a stronger voice and that children in care are freed up for adoption. She said that there were about 600 children who lived in out of home care of which some 230 were being fostered.

Nationalist Party spokesman for the Family Chris Said also spoke about the need to strengthen legislation in the best interest of children. ?

How Lasers and Glue Help Weld Tissue Ruptures

Lasers could help weld intestines together with the aid of a novel glue filled with microscopic gold rods, researchers say.

Diseases that affect the bowels include colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, both of which afflict about 1.5 million people in the United States annually. During surgery to remove diseased tissue, leaks from intestinal holes are common and can lead to life-threatening bacterial infections.

Lasers are already able to weld ruptures in tissues such as cartilage, blood vessels, corneas, livers, urinary tracts, nerves and skin together by causing proteins to fuse. This stitch-free way of sealing holes is especially helpful in places where sutures and staples may not work, such as thin, fragile tissues.

One concern with conventional laser tissue welding, however, is that any welds might be weak. To solve this problem, chemical engineer Kaushal Rege at Arizona State University in Tempe and his colleagues are developing a protein-based glue that can act as a solder that lasers can heat to patch up holes. [(Warning: Blood) Veti-Gel Stops Bleeding Instantly]

When heated, the goo solidifies into an elastic material that can behave "much like a rubber band," Rege said. "Tissues like colons have to transport matter through them, and the elasticity of materials patching up holes is important."

The composite is mostly composed of artificial proteins, but embedded within it are tiny gold rods only 15 nanometers ? or billionths of a meter ? wide and 50 nanometers long. (In comparison, the average human hair is about 100,000 nanometers wide.) The nano-rods absorb near-infrared light, which passes harmlessly through human tissue for the most part, causing them to heat up enough to coagulate the surrounding proteins in the goo.

The researchers successfully used laser welding and their goo to patch holes up to several millimeters large in pig guts. These welds significantly increased the amount of pressure needed to cause leakage or bursting of repaired tissues and created liquid-tight seals that prevented gut bacteria from sneaking out.

The laser glue should be biodegradable, Rege noted, although tests of it in animals are needed to be sure. The gold nano-rods are also thought to be fairly inert, "although studies are needed to look for any long-term toxicity," he added.

The researchers aim to proceed to experiments with live animals. They also hope their composite might not only be capable of repairing holes, but intestines that have completely been cut in two, Rege said.

Rege, along with graduate student Huang-Chiao Huang and their colleagues, detailed their findings online March 26 the journal ACS Nano.

TransCanada says Keystone XL to be delayed

TORONTO (AP) -- The chief executive of TransCanada Corp. said Friday the long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline will be in service months later than expected and cost more as it continues to await U.S. government approval.

TransCanada had been sticking to its late 2014 or early 2015 start-up target, but the regulatory process has dragged on. It is now looking at a mid to late-2015 start-up.

CEO Russ Girling noted on a conference call with analysts detailing first quarter results that the controversial pipeline is in its 67th month of the approval process.

"Unfortunately, continued delays ... have an impact on both our schedule and our costs. Based on our current assessment of timing of the permit we would currently anticipate the pipeline could become operational in the second half of 2015," Girling said.

The Calgary, Alberta-based company said the $5.3 billion cost estimate will increase depending on the timing of the permit.

The Obama administration is considering whether to approve the pipeline, which would carry 800,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta across six U.S. states to the Texas Gulf Coast. A decision is expected this summer.

The pipeline has become a flashpoint in the U.S. debate over climate change. Republicans and business and labor groups have urged the Obama administration to approve the pipeline as a source of much-needed jobs and a step toward North American energy independence. Environmental groups have been pressuring President Barack Obama to reject the pipeline, saying it would carry "dirty oil" that contributes to global warming. They also worry about a spill.

"The project very much remains in the interest of the United States and we remain of confident that it will receive regulatory approval and be constructed," Girling said.

Obama's initial rejection of the pipeline last year went over badly in Canada, which relies on the U.S. for 97 percent of its energy exports.

The pipeline is critical to Canada, which needs infrastructure in place to export its growing oil sands production from northern Alberta. The region has the world's third largest oil reserves, with 170 billion barrels of proven reserves.

NFL draft: Central Michigan's Eric Fisher is No. 1 pick

NEW YORK (AP) ? Short on glam, slim on glitter and no sign of Manti Te'o, the NFL draft was still a solid B-plus.

As in Big, as in Brawn, as in Bulk, as in Beefy.

We're talking a scale-busting 600 pounds at the outset Thursday night with offensive tackles Eric Fisher of Central Michigan and Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M.

The first seven picks were all linemen: four on offense, three on defense.

"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," Fisher said.

None of the teams making the first 32 selections went for Te'o, not even Minnesota, which had three first-round picks. The All-America linebacker's poor performance in Notre Dame's loss to Alabama in the national championship game surely was a factor. Still to be determined is how much the fake girlfriend hoax cost him.

Unlike the last few years when bumper crops of quarterbacks reigned, this was pure muscle, and lots of it.

Actually, not a single QB was selected until Florida State's EJ Manuel went to Buffalo at No. 16 ? the lowest since 2000, when Chad Pennington went 18th to the Jets.

No running backs were chosen, either, for the first time since 1963.

As for Te'o, he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.82 seconds at the NFL combine, slow for a linebacker. He improved at Notre Dame's pro day, but not nearly enough to go in the opening round. In January he acknowledged he was a victim of a hoax ? it turned out the dead "girlfriend" he talked about last season wasn't dead and never existed.

Fisher became the first Mid-American Conference player selected at the top when Kansas City's new regime led by coach Andy Reid chose the 6-foot-7, 306-pound offensive tackle.

"This is so surreal," Fisher said. "I'm ready to get to work right now. I'm ready to start playing some football. I can't process what's going on right now."

Fisher was followed by All-American Joeckel going to Jacksonville, defensive end Dion Jordan of Oregon to Miami, which traded up with Oakland, and Oklahoma tackle Lane Johnson to Philadelphia. Not a skill position player yet in sight ? a stark change from the last four drafts, when quarterbacks went first.

The procession of linemen continued with BYU defensive end Ziggy Ansah, born in Ghana, going to Detroit; LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo to Cleveland; and North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper to Arizona.

That made for a ton of beef after the first seven picks. In all, 18 linemen went in the first round, weighing an estimated 5,650 total pounds.

And they wore it well, with their designer suits that barely were ruffled when they each engulfed Roger Goodell in the now traditional bear hugs between draftee and commissioner.

"It's called a three-piece, right?" asked Joeckel, who sported blue checks with the vested suit, along with a striped tie.

Fisher was only the third offensive tackle picked No. 1, joining Orlando Pace (1997) and Jake Long (2008) since the 1970 merger of the NFL and AFL. It's also the first time since '70 that offensive tackles went 1-2.

Even without a high-profile passer, runner or tackler going at the outset, the fans in the home of the Rockettes were pumped. They chanted "U-S-A, U-S-A" when Goodell paid tribute to the first responders at the Boston Marathon bombings and to the victims of the West, Texas explosion. They roared when Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath began the countdown to the first outdoor Super Bowl in a cold-weather site by taking the podium and screaming: "New York; Super Bowl 48."

The crowd didn't seem to care that early on the picks were all heifers, not hoofers. No Andrew Lucks or RG3s at the top of this crop.

"What you're getting is a very athletic player, a great kid, smart kid, engineering major," Reid said of Fisher, who really began to draw attention with a strong Senior Bowl, showing he could handle the highest level of competition. "He can play any position along the line, and loves to play the game."

Joeckel didn't seem any less thrilled to go No. 2.

"I don't have words for all the emotions I feel," he said. "It's the best feeling of my entire life."

Miami, envisioning Jordan as the next Jason Taylor, sent its first-rounder (12th overall) and this year's second-rounder to Oakland. Then new Eagles coach Chip Kelly got a road-grader for his uptempo offense in Johnson.

"Tackle is not a very sexy position," Johnson said. "But it's a position of dire need."

The next big trade saw the Rams move up eight spots ? and send four picks to Buffalo to do so. St. Louis ended the pursuit of heft by grabbing West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin, who at 5-8, 174 pounds, could probably fit in the hip pocket of any of the guys picked ahead of him.

The New York Jets may have found a replacement for star cornerback Darrelle Revis ? traded to Tampa Bay ? when they picked Alabama All-American Dee Milliner. That was the first of three straight selections from two-time national champion Alabama: Tennessee took guard Chance Warmack and San Diego got offensive tackle D.J. Fluker.

Roll Tide, indeed.

Oakland used the pick it got from the Dolphins for Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden, who nearly died last November after a collision in practice tore a blood vessel off the back of his heart. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery.

Unlike with their choice of Milliner, which was met raucous cheers, the Jets next selection, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson of Missouri, drew scattered boos and even a few "Who?" comments.

"I'm here to bring a championship back to New York," Richardson said.

Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, who also had a heart scare at the NFL combine but then checked out fine, went 14th to Carolina, followed by Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro to New Orleans.

Then came Manuel, although many analysts pegged West Virginia's Geno Smith as the top quarterback.

Former Patriots guard Joe Andruzzi, who carried an injured female runner to safety after the Boston Marathon explosions, displayed a jersey with the city's 617 area code and "Boston Strong" written on the front. He was supposed to announce New England's pick, but the Patriots dealt it to Minnesota, which took Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson.

Andruzzi, a native New Yorker, said, "There's a new saying in Boston: Boston Strong" before unveiling the jersey as "Sweet Caroline" was played on the loudspeakers.

Pittsburgh, which always seems to find standout linebackers, took the highest-rated one in Georgia's Jarvis Jones. His fellow All-American, Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, was still on the board.

But another member of the Fighting Irish, tight end Tyler Eifert, was chosen 21st overall by Cincinnati.

Atlanta's choice of Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant gave that family three brothers in the league. His older siblings Marcus and Isaiah preceded him.

One major surprise was the New York Giants' selection of Justin Pugh ? yet another tackle, but one who wasn't projected to go in the opening round by many draft analysts.

The round took 3 hours, 33 minutes.

Kepler is a space-based observatory whose unblinking gaze has rested on some 170,000 stars simultaneously since May 2009.

The three planets are the smallest the observatory has yet detected in stellar habitable zones. These zones represent distances where a planet receives enough light from its host star to harbor liquid water on its surface. Liquid water is essential for the emergence of organic life.

The discoveries bring the Kepler team tantalizingly close to its ultimate goal ? to find Earth-mass planets orbiting sun-like stars at Earth-like distances, while also taking a broader census to see how many planetary systems with an Earth-like planet the Milky Way may hold.

Led by William Borucki, a researcher at the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's Ames Research Center near Mountain View, Calif., the team has confirmed 115 extra-solar planets so far, and it has amassed a roster of more than 2,700 planet candidates.

Two of the new planets are part of a five-planet system orbiting a star some 1,200 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. The star, Kepler 62, is about two-thirds the size of the sun and has 70 percent of the sun's mass. It's also about 3 billion years older than the sun.

The system's three inner planets, one comparable in size to Mars, are too close to their sun to be livable. Kepler 62-e, the fourth planet out, however, falls within the habitable zone. Orbiting once every 122 days, the planet is about 60 percent larger than Earth.

The team speculates that the planet is covered with water, although the system is too far away to take the measurements needed to estimate the planet's mass. Researchers need that measurement to determine the planet's density, a major clue as to its bulk composition.

Instead, modeling studies have indicated that planets ranging from 1.5 to two times Earth's size tend to be far more watery than planets closer to Earth's size. Thus, while the nature of the planet remains speculative for now, "the fascinating idea is that we've actually found the first ocean planet, the first water world out there," said Lisa Kaltenegger, an astronomer with the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., during a mission briefing Thursday afternoon.

Lawmakers Weigh Proposed Soda Tax | KTXL FOX40

Soda ban New York

SACRAMENTO-

A proposal to tax sweetened soda in California has renewed debate over the state?s role in preventing obesity among its residents.

State Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel) has introduced legislation that would levy a 1-cent-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages, including sodas, as part of an effort to fight obesity among young people.

The money paid by beverage distributors under SB 622 would go to a Children?s Health Promotion Fund to pay for a statewide childhood obesity prevention program. ?This bill will combat the obesity crisis and ensure that our children? and future generations of Californians? are not doomed to a shorter life expectancy and can instead live longer, healthier lives,? Monning said.

In addition to funding the program, Monning said the measure ?is intended to discourage excessive consumption of sweetened beverages by increasing the price of these products.??

Stocks inch higher after jobless claims fall

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stocks edged higher Thursday morning as investors were encouraged by a decrease in the number of claims for unemployment benefits last week and several strong earnings from companies.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell 16,000 to 339,000, the second-lowest level in more than five years, according to the Labor Department.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 59 points to 14,735 points after the first hour of trading, or 0.4 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up nine at 1,588, a gain of 0.6 percent.

The drop in jobless claims is especially welcome in a job market that has suffered some recent setbacks. In March, employers added only 88,000 jobs. That was a sharp drop from the previous four months, when hiring averaged 220,000 per month. The unemployment rate fell to 7.6 percent from 7.7 percent, but only because more people stopped looking for jobs.

Many companies have been reporting better first-quarter results, but not necessarily because of stronger economic conditions.

So far this season, 71 percent of S&P 500 companies have beat analysts' profit expectations, according to John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet. But that has come more from cost-cutting than from business going gangbusters. Fifty-six percent of those companies have missed estimates for revenue.

The trend has a precedent: Last year, less than half of S&P 500 companies beat revenue estimates in the second and third quarters, according to Butters.

Dow Chemical, which reported results Thursday, fit both descriptions. The company managed to increase profits even as revenue slipped because it cut costs and paid down debt. The stock was up 4 percent at $33.59.

In a report to clients Thursday morning, ConvergEx Group analyst Nicholas Colas noted the higher earnings but said they don't match the "real feel" of an economy still crimped by "lackluster jobs growth, a flattening rate of improvement in the housing market, and incremental government austerity measures."

"If U.S. companies have proven anything in the last four years of subpar macroeconomic results," Colas wrote, "it is that they can make gallons of lemonade from just a few shriveled bits of citrus."

Profit and revenue jumped at the cruise line Royal Caribbean as more people booked vacations than a year ago, and the stock jumped 7 percent to $36.66. This year's comparisons, however, are a bit unusual: Last year's results were hurt because of the sinking of the Costa Concordia, owned by rival cruise line Carnival.

Profit and revenue also rose at 3M, maker of Scotch tape and construction equipment. But the stock was down 3 percent at $104.51. Investors were unnerved when the company cut its profit predictions for the year, citing a "low-growth economic environment."

Profit and revenue fell at Cliffs Natural Resources and Carbo Ceramics, but the stocks went in opposite directions. Cliffs, which sells iron ore, shot 15 percent higher to $21.05. Carbo, which provides services and parts for the petroleum industry, plunged 13 percent to $74.92.

At Cliffs, the lower profits were still better than analysts had expected. At Carbo, investors were worried because the company said Chinese ceramic imports were hurting its pricing, and because drilling companies were taking more rigs out of action.

The Nasdaq composite index was up 27 to 3,296, or 0.8 percent.

In other markets, gold futures rose 2 percent to $1,452 an ounce and the price of crude oil edged up 0.3 percent to $91.67 a barrel. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up to 1.72 percent from 1.71 percent.
