Studies show that many pets, including rats, use sniffing as a form of communication. For example, rats use sniffing as a way to show dominance and to avoid aggression. Since we do not see our personal pets sniffing throughout the day, it is hard to believe that it is their form of communication. However, if observing a rat, you'll notice that they sniff a lot.
