Game of the Week: Foosball 2012 | Video Games, Reviews ...

A peculiar little confection this week. Foosball 2012, madcap progeny of Grip Games, is a fledgling release for PS3 and PS Vita. It struck PSN with a resounding impact, akin to a clown descending at great velocity from a tightrope into a jelly moat. (Perhaps there are confectionary sharks in there, to devour the hapless, stricken entertainer. We simply do not know.) Such a tenuous resounding impact analogy refers not to instantaneous money-revelling success, but to the all-pervading miasma of weirdness herein. It permeates proceedings like the musty smell of a doorstep hobo, very much present in tangible stench form long after the authorities have banished him.
It?s foosball, Jim, but not as we know it.

The table, the diminutive wood dudes, and the handles of justice are in attendence, naturellement; it all retains the inherent aesthetic of the ludicrous-yet-wonderful game of champions. On PS Vita, knobs are twiddled with vigorous gusto via the left stick, while passes and shots are aimed avec the right. Buttons enable certain formidable trick or power techniques once they are earned. You have options for a quick off-or-online match, or you may ascend the loft heights of the World Tour mode, the nucleus of Foosball 2012?s single player travails. It is these seemingly-innocuous CPU matches with their burgeoning challenge that unleash the crazy.

With each victory, you will accrue stars pertaining to your performance. These can be exchanged for the aformentioned ?special attacks,? insofar as this business warrants such a term. Incidentally, you will unlock a new customization option for winning; generally a fresh volley from the ballista of lunacy directly into your beleaguered vision-glands. There are alternate table designs, and there is also the (surely much ballyhooed and ravenously awaited) option to play with Mafia foosmen. Or, indeed, anomalous little hotdogs. Just why in the name of the almighty we would elect to do such a thing is befuddling, but it?s a possibility. While we?re gleefully reveling like pigs in the trough of crazy, you can further opt to kick a fireball around in lieu of a foosball? ball.

There is method, I?d venture, to the madness. Such unlockables lend a degree of replayability and single player longevity to a rather sparce package. They also strive to emulate the spirit of Foosball 2012?s bigger, actually tangible brother. Foosball, away from the digital realm, is oftentimes a madcap, riotous experience. It?s a merrily bizarre concept, which doesn?t lend itself to convoluted tactical nous and excessive think-ery. As such, seeing a row of British beefeaters or loon-faced dolls propelling a snowball across the table, with all the gusto their deformed ?legs? can muster, is very much in the inherent Foosball spirit. In sum, it?s a title tailor-fit to its budget PSN status. Prospects for lone players are indubitably limited, but console crossplay and online multiplayer bolster the shelf life of the game somewhat. An esoteric offering, perhaps, but one that fans of this wacky classic in its hefty table form will appreciate.
